Guests enjoy 'Braai' during Thunderstorm - 02.03.06
Strictly speaking the surroundings of Aus get more rain during the winter months of May to September (on average 50 mm) than during summer (about 30 mm). This year, however, things turned out totally different: 163 mm of rain were recorded in the park in January and February alone. “We have a green paradise all around us”, Willem Swiegers senior, whose sons run the park and the accommodation facilities, bubbles over with happiness. “The plains are full of grass and flowers. Gemsbok have flocked together in groups and they have many calves by now; there are lots of springbok, too."

Quite a few guests got stuck on their journey from the north. “My son, Piet, was called out to the area around Helmeringhausen several times to help guests get their vehicle through the seasonal rivers”, says Willem. “For the tourists it was an exciting adventure, of course.”

Like for Julian and Michelle Probets from England, even though they did not get stuck: "We arrived at the accommodation after ten hours on the road, and since we had driven through a horrendous thunderstorm I would say that we were rather agitated. Piet put us at ease and told us about the local area and what we could do during our stay... walks, braai etc. Anyway, we drove the 7 km to our room and suddenly felt totally relaxed and at peace again. That night, at Piet's suggestion, we had a braai - and what fun we had trying to cook in a storm! What scenery!

And eventually what a sunset! Piet, many, many thanks, I loved that place.” (Julian Probets, Manager In-Flight Audit, Thomas Cook Airlines, UK)

The whole of Namibia is over the moon about an exceptionally rewarding rainy season. Many of the ephemeral rivers flooded and thereby blocked quite a few tourists on their way to the next accommodation facility. The country’s dams – vital for the supply of drinking water – are full, some of them literally to the brim. Everywhere the desert shows off its green finery...
