Excellent Prospects for a Desert in Bloom - 18.05.06
Chances are good that the Succulent Karoo Desert south-west of Aus in the south of Namibia will have a fantastic flowering season this year. During April, which is the ideal month for the germination of winter annuals, we had three times more rain than on average. Pending follow-up rainfalls, flowers will be in abundance from mid-June till September. June, July and August will be the peak period.
This landscape explodes into an expansive carpet of yellow and violet flowers after the winter rains. The blossoming desert is a deeply moving natural phenomenon which draws thousands of visitors to Namaqualand on South Africa’s west coast each year. The same can be witnessed in the area south-west of Aus.
To discover the delights of the Namib and Succulent Karoo Desert, Klein-Aus Vista is ideally located for a 2-3 day stopover between Sossusvlei and the Fish River Canyon. Visit its privately owned, 51,000 ha Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park at about 1,400 metres above sea level. It is a landscape adorned by granite outcrops and mountains, dry riverbeds and sweeping desert plains.

... and in violet
Klein-Aus Vista offers various options for guided excursions. Or go for a walk on our well-marked hiking trails in the mountains: different trails, for intermediate to advanced hikers, take between 2 and 5 hours. A choice of unique accommodation facilities at separate locations, to suit any traveller’s budget, makes Klein-Aus Vista a definite must on a trip to the south. In fact guests are spoilt for choice: there is Eagle's Nest Lodge with chalets in the lap of nature; the Desert Horse Inn in walking distance of the restaurant and reception; 'Geisterschlucht' dormitory for self-catering and there is the camping site.
